Martin Thomas
Age at start of race: 46
Martin Thomas is a 46 year-old freelance writer who lives in Brighton with his long-suffering wife Rachael and their kids, nine year-old Oskar and Marni, who’s six. He’s always enjoyed cycling – even earning a living at it for a while as a bicycle courier in London in the 80s. On taking up the TRAT challenge, Martin says, “It’s a classic mid-life crisis act of desperation, anyone can see that. It’s also the most demanding and exciting challenge I’ve ever taken on and training for it has made me fitter than I’ve been for decades. I can’t wait for it to begin and I’m dreading it being over. I’m really pleased we’re raising money for the Bishop Simeon Trust too – Rachael and I spent some of our honeymoon in South Africa and we have friends who live there. The Trust does fantastic work and I’m delighted to be supporting it.”
Martin Hart
Age at start of race: 47
I'm 57, married and have worked mostly in alternative education in SE London for 35 years. I'm a keen recreational cyclist and last year fancied the challenge of completing one of the classic rides - Land's End to John O'Groats, in pretty quick time. My involvement in fund raising for the BST quickly changed my motivation for TRAT, as the magnitude of the HIV/AIDS crisis in S Africa began to dawn on me. I don't need to meet the cycling challenge again, but funding the Trust's work remains as just as important - so I'm back and would really appreciate any sponsorship!
Mike Rainton
Age at start of race: 64
In the summer of 2010 Mike Rainton a Lowestoft College lecturer has kicked off his fundraising and training campaign as he prepares to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats for the fourth year in a row.
64-year-old Mike Rainton from Oulton Broad is set to jump into the saddle again in June to ride the 874 mile route in just six days. As well as having his sights set firmly on the finish line, Mike who teaches Psychology and the Foundation Studies groups, is hoping this year’s fundraising will take the total he has raised for the Trust to well over £10,000.
Ed Condry
Age at start of race: 57
Dr Ed Condry is the Canon Treasurer of Canterbury Cathedral, where he and Sarah live with various dogs, cats, guinea pigs and chickens. Their four children have all now left home. Sarah is also coming on TRAT as part of the vital support team. “The Bishop Simeon Trust is a great cause. My target is to raise £15 per mile which will be £13125. I heard about TRAT last summer and knew I was going to have a go. In the last few years I’ve organised a number of adventures with friends – among them cycling the 1200 miles from Canterbury to Rome, rowing the English Channel in 2008, and last year rowing the length of the Thames from its source to London in an 8-oared shallop. The Land’s End to John O’Groats ride is going to be the most physically challenging of them all. I just hope I can keep up with the others. ”
Howard Sansom
Age at start of race: 39
I am a keen cyclist and this will be my second Race Against Time after completing the ride in 2008.
The end to end is a fantastic experience and physical challenge and I'm looking forward to helping the Bishop Simeon Trust and cycling with my fellow riders on this years race.
